MUMBAI, Aug. 13 -- Seven people, including four members of a family, were killed and seven others injured after a landslide struck a row tenement located near a hillock in Mumbai's Kurla West around 3.30 am on Wednesday following heavy rain, officials aware of the matter said. The landslide hit three shanties in Gaushiya Chawl in Ashok Nagar locality of Chirag Nagar, civic officials said. The area is close to the suburbs of Kurla and Ghatkopar.Soil and boulders from the adjoining hillock fell on the shanties, officials said, adding that seven persons were declared brought dead at the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital. The deceased included Mohamad Samir Ansari (16), Sahil Husen Abdul Kazi (19), Arif Shaikh (28), his children Aban (2) and Manat (4), Marjina Arif Shaikh (27), and Viket Ramesh Yadav (27). Those injured are undergoing treatment, they said. A 40-member team of the NDRF, along with 50 workers deployed by the L-Ward of the BMC and Fire Brigade teams, were engaged in the rescue operation, officials said. Municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide said the structures stood on government land and residents had been repeatedly warned about the danger. A civic official said notices had been issued as part of the BMC's annual pre-monsoon preparedness measures. Residents, however, said they had nowhere else to go.
