5 booked for duping Fazilka man with fake job offer
Rudrapur, April 10 -- A 26-year-old man, Rohit Kumar, from Fazilka has allegedly been confined in Ethiopia after being sent abroad from his maternal uncle's place in Gadarpur in Udham Singh Nagar district through an illegal "donkey route" by agents under the guise of a job offer in South Korea, police said on Thursday.
According to police, the miscreants have demanded a ransom of Rs.50 lakh for his release and have threatened to chop off his ears if the amount is not paid. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Udham Singh Nagar Ajay Ganpati said police have registered an FIR against five persons, including a woman, from Gadarpur and Punjab who were allegedly involved in sending the victim abroad through illegal means.
"A man met me on Tuesday and alleged that his nephew had been confined in Ethiopia by some miscreants. They sent photographs of his confinement on the mobile phone and demanded ransom for his release. Police have registered an FIR against an agent and four of his associates in Gadarpur," said Ajay Ganpati, SSP, Udham Singh Nagar.
The victim's maternal uncle Rajkumar, a resident of Abudullanagar village under Gadarpur police station limits, met the SSP along with former BJP MLA Rajkumar Thukral.
Rajkumar told police that his nephew Rohit Kumar (26), a resident of Fazilka district, had come to Gadarpur two months ago for his mother's treatment. During his stay, he allegedly came into contact with Himanshu Sharma, a resident of Cinema Hall Road in Gadarpur, who promised him a job in South Korea through a Punjab-based agent and demanded Rs.15 lakh as commission.
According to the complaint, Rohit allegedly paid Rs.5.65 lakh in advance, while the remaining amount was to be paid after reaching South Korea. He was reportedly taken to Bangkok on April 4 and then to Ethiopia via Sharjah.
Upon reaching Ethiopia, some individuals allegedly confined him and demanded Rs.50 lakh for his release while threatening to mutilate him, police said.
Ganpati said police registered the FIR on Wednesday after the complainant produced phone call records and photographs showing Rohit's confinement.
"I instructed officers to register an FIR after the complainant produced evidence. A police team has been sent to Delhi and Punjab to arrest the accused," said the SSP.
Gadarpur police have booked Himanshu Sharma, Abhimanyu and Shweta of Gadarpur, Trilochan Singh of Hoshiarpur and Mandeep of Jalandhar under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)....
