Kolkata, July 18 -- Five people including four school children were killed after a passenger train hit a pool-car and a bicycle at a manned level crossing in West Bengal's Murshidabad districts on Friday morning, officials said, adding that the gateman has been arrested. The incident took place around 6.40 am at a level crossing between Khagraghat Road and Karnasubarna railway stations near Berhampore. "The gateman incorrectly opened the level crossing to allow some vehicles through. But suddenly the Nimtita-Katwa train, which was also scheduled to cross that spot around the same time, cameand hit the SUV," said a railway official. Police said that seven children were travelling in the SUV. While two children and a cyclist died on the spot, two more children succumbed to injuries at a hospital later, police said. Three other kids and the driver of the pool car were rushed to the hospital. One of the children was released after treatment while two kids and the driver are undergoing treatment. All the children were below 10 years old. While the gateman Anup Karmakar, 37, has been arrested, another official (permanent way inspector) Kaushik Mal has been suspended. An investigation has been launched, police said. Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari asserted that it was "not an accident" and attributed it to human error. "This is completely a human error. This is not an accident. I have asked the police to check whether the gateman was intoxicated. His crime is beyond mercy," he said. "My heart goes out to the bereaved families, especially the parents of the young students who lost their lives. There are no words to ease such profound pain and the entire state stands with the bereaved families," he said on X. An ex gratia of Rs.10 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs.2.5 lakh for each injured person has been released, Eastern Railway's chief PRO Shibram Majhi said, adding that the Eastern Railway general manager has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident....
