Dehradun, April 2 -- Police on Wednesday arrested three more people in the killing of 74-year-old retired Army brigadier Mukesh Kumar Joshi, taking the total number of arrested accused to seven, officers said. Joshi was struck by a stray bullet on Monday during a shootout between occupants of two cars in a high-speed chase sparked by a late-night brawl at a city club. SSP Pramendra Dobhal said, "We earlier arrested four accused in connection with the case. During interrogation, the names of several other accused emerged. Acting on leads, police have now arrested three more people - Aadesh Giri (50), a resident of Shamli in Uttar Pradesh; Sameer Chaudhary (21), from Haridwar district; and Mohit Arora (28), a resident of Dwarka in New Delhi." Police said efforts are ongoing to trace and arrest the remaining accused, and raids are being conducted at their suspected hideouts. Seven teams are working on the case, SP city Pramod Kumar said on Tuesday. Brigadier Joshi, who served in the Corps of Military Intelligence, was on his morning walk near Johri village on Monday when he was caught in firing between occupants of two SUVs during a high-speed chase triggered by the brawl at a club on Mussoorie Road. The last rites of the retired brigadier were conducted on Wednesday. Ahead of the cremation, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Joshi's residence, paid tributes to the deceased, met the bereaved family and expressed condolences, praying for peace to the departed soul and strength for the family. Dhami said strict action would be taken against those involved, reiterating that public safety remains the government's top priority. He added that officials have been directed to launch "Operation Prahar" across the state against undesirable and hooligan elements. "Those who attempt to disrupt law and order will not be spared under any circumstances," he said. On Tuesday, following instructions from CM Dhami, sub-inspector Ashok Kumar, in-charge of Kuthal Gate outpost, and deputy excise inspector Soban Singh (excise range-3, Mussoorie) were suspended with immediate effect over alleged negligence in Monday's incident. Police arrested four people from both groups on Monday. They were identified as Rohit Kumar (20), a resident of Uttam Nagar in Delhi; Mohammad Akhlaq (23), a resident of Bihar; club owner Sandeep Kumar (43), a resident of Nangloi in Delhi; and Aditya Chaudhary (20), a resident of Raipur in Dehradun. Dobhal said the case stemmed from a fight at the club, ruling out initial speculation of road rage.
