2 Punjab-origin men shot dead in Italy while leaving gurdwara
Rome, April 20 -- Two Punjab-origin men were shot dead in Italy's Covo in Bergamo province just as they were leaving a warehouse used as a place of worship during a gathering for Baisakhi festival, local media reported on Sunday.
The attack occurred on Friday, a few minutes before midnight in front of Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur Ji in the industrial area of the town, according to La Sicilia newspaper.
The deceased were identified as Raginder Singh, 48, a resident of Covo, and Gurmit Singh, 48, from Agnadello. Gurmit is survived by his wife and two children.
The assailant allegedly approached the men, opened fire and then fled in a car, leaving the community gathered for Baisakhi festivities shocked, the paper reported.
Initial findings suggest the shooting was a premeditated attack rather than the result of a sudden altercation, the report said. Around 10 shell casings were recovered from the scene, which investigators said pointed to a "coldly planned execution".
The bodies were transferred to Pavia for autopsy as investigators continue to maintain strict confidentiality around the case, the report added.
They are examining surveillance footage, analysing ballistic evidence and questioning witnesses for further leads about the motive behind the attack.
A witness was quoted as telling reporters that the shooter was "an Indian from Antegnate" who also frequented the gurdwara. According to the same witness, the bullets also grazed a third person, it said.
An official celebration for Baisakhi was planned nearby on Saturday with the participation of local institutions....
