2 Punjab-origin men held for firing shots at house
Chandigarh, June 27 -- Two Punjab-origin men have been arrested and charged with Criminal Code offences in Canada following a Surrey Police Service (SPS) investigation into an extortion-related firing incident near a residence.
The SPS said on June 11, police were called shortly after 6 am about reports that gun shots had been fired outside a residence near 96 Avenue and 133A Street around 5.30 am.
Officers confirmed damage caused by gunfire to the exterior of the residence.
The residence was occupied at the time of the shots fired and fortunately no one was injured.
SPS's Extortion Response Team (ExRT) took over the lead on the investigation, with support from project assurance and frontline officers, following an initial investigation by SPS's major crime section. Suspects and two associated residences in Surrey were identified, and search warrants were obtained.
On June 12, SPS ExRT members, with assistance from the lower mainland district emergency response team, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and other SPS teams, executed the warrants and arrested four suspects.
Two of these men have now been charged with Criminal Code offences in connection with the shooting. Arman Singh, 21, is facing one count of reckless discharge of a firearm. Simarjeet Singh, 22, has been charged with one count of reckless discharge of a firearm.
Both Arman Singh and Simarjeet Singh have been remanded in custody till June 29. As both are foreign nationals, officers have contacted the CBSA. The other two men arrested have not been charged with criminal offences yet and remain in CBSA custody.
Releasing the images of Arman and Simarjeet, the SPS asked additional witnesses, victims or associates to come forward with relevant information regarding their activities, which can assist police in gathering information on potential criminal networks involved in violent extortions....
