Shimla, July 25 -- Thirteen people, including a six-month-old infant, were killed after a landslide triggered a massive rockfall that crushed a Tata Sumo on the Udaipur-Pangi road in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul-Spiti district on Friday, officials said. The incident took place near Kaddu Nala on the Sansari Nala-Killar-Thirot-Tandi road when huge boulders broke loose from a hillside and fell directly onto the moving vehicle. The impact completely flattened the Tata Sumo, leaving little chance of survival for its occupants. According to police, the vehicle, bearing registration number HP-01M-2210, was travelling from Kullu to Pangi valley with 13 people on board. All the passengers were residents of the tribal Pangi valley in Chamba district. Following the impact, the rear portion of the vehicle caught fire. Locals and army personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames before rescue teams began removing the debris. One passenger was rescued alive but succumbed to injuries while being shifted to a hospital, said officials. The deceased were identified as Veer Singh (35), Saurabh Singh (12), Veer Singh (driver), Bhudi Singh (46), Kamla Kumari (40), Anil Kumar (26), Rekha (25), Anjana, Sonam Angmo, Aaravi (6 months), Sanjay, Mangal Chand and Inder Singh (45). Police said the victims had halted at Tindi on Thursday night after the Udaipur-Killar road was closed due to landslides. They resumed their journey on Friday morning after authorities reopened the route. However, while passing through the landslide-prone stretch near Kaddu Nala, massive rocks suddenly crashed onto the vehicle. Lahaul-Spiti deputy commissioner of Kiran Bhadana confirmed that all 13 occupants, including the driver, died in the accident.
