New Delhi, Aug. 5 -- Thirteen Indian seafarers were rescued from an Indian-flagged vessel that sank after an attack off the coast of Yemen on Tuesday, with the government condemning the incident and reiterating its call to end the targeting of commercial shipping. Shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal said on social media that the cargo vessel MSV Faize Noore Oliya sank after being hit by "a projectile" near Yemeni waters. However, Yemen's government-aligned National Resistance Forces said the vessel was attacked by "an explosives-laden boat" off the country's western coast. "We condemn the attack on the Indian-flagged commercial vessel, MSV Faize Noore Oliya, that sank in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen on August 4, 2026," the external affairs ministry said in a statement. Sonowal too said India "strongly condemns this unprovoked attack on the defenseless mechanised sailing vessel". The vessel's 14-member crew, including 13 Indian nationals and one Yemeni citizen, were rescued in a joint operation by the Yemeni Navy and Coast Guard and taken to the port of Mokha. The Indian embassy in Saudi Arabia is monitoring the situation and coordinating with Yemeni authorities for the safety and security of the crew, the statement said. The statement described continuing attacks on commercial shipping in West Asia as "deeply worrisome".
