'Stalker' pours sanitiser on minor girl, sets her afire
Mohali, Aug. 23 -- A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly pouring sanitiser on a 16-year-old girl and setting her on fire at her house in Phase 7 on Friday.
The girl suffered 80% burns and is undergoing treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
The accused, identified as Deepak, has been arrested.
According to police, the accused allegedly reached the girl's house with two relatives following a dispute with her family.
He reportedly entered the room where the girl was present, poured sanitiser on her and set her on fire before locking the room from outside and fleeing.
Hearing her screams, the girl's family broke open the door and rushed her to the civil hospital in Phase 6. Doctors later referred her to PGIMER in view of the intensity of her burns.
Police said the incident followed an earlier dispute between the accused and the girl's family.
Her family had allegedly objected to the accused's conduct towards her. The girl's family alleged that the accused had been harassing her and that they had earlier objected to his behaviour.
The exact motive remains under investigation.
