How overconsumption of energy drinks can impact your health
India, Aug. 7 -- Energy drinks are a popular choice for countering fatigue, and a go-to option for a quick boost in alertness. But how does it affect your health?
Dr T S Harshavardhan, a senior consultant in nephrology at Kauvery Hospital, Vadapalani, Chennai said, "Relying on energy drinks too often can gradually affect your kidneys."
"Energy drinks usually have a lot of caffeine, sugar, taurine, guarana (more caffeine), ginseng and B vitamins in them," the nephrologist shared, adding, "Taurine is generally okay to have in moderate amounts. Having too much caffeine, sugar and other stimulants can be harmful for you. It can increase your blood pressure, cause dehydration and make your kidneys work on overdrive."
The doctor cautioned that teenagers and young adults, particularly those aged 18 to 34, may be especially vulnerable, as they account for 30-50% of consumers worldwide. People with certain underlying health conditions may face an even greater risk: "People who have pre-existing kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, past kidney stones, heart problems or are on medications for chronic disorders need to be very careful." The doctor advised children and pregnant women to not consume the drinks at all.
The doctor noted that no clear data establishes a safe daily amount of energy drinks. But moderation is key, and energy drinks should never replace water....
