covid is back: A cause for concern?
India, July 15 -- The deaths of two men in Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa district since June who tested positive for Covid-19 have raised concerns across the country. In response, the health authorities in the state have stepped up surveillance, strengthened screening measures and prepared isolation wards. However, doctors say there is no reason for widespread alarm.
"For the most part, these infections will manifest in a mild form and will rarely need hospitalisation. However, old and chronically ill patients should consult a doctor in case their condition deteriorates," says respiratory specialist Dr Harish Chafle from Gleneagles Hospitals, Mumbai.
The rise in cases during the monsoon is not unexpected, as the weather allows respiratory infections to spread more easily. "During the monsoon, people spend longer periods indoors in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, increasing chances of airborne transmission," says Dr Jatin Ahuja, Consultant, Infectious Disease, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, adding that high-risk individuals must take preventive measures and stay updated with recommended vaccinations.
On June 28, a 60-year-old man was being treated for a lung infection and had comorbidities like kidney disease, diabetes and hypertension, at Christian Medical College, Vellore. An RT-PCR test conducted postmortem confirmed he had tested positive for Covid-19, as per reports.
In the second case, a 43-year-old man from Kadapa died on July 7 at the Government General Hospital-RIMS due to a severe lung infection and related complications, and later tested positive for Covid. As per medical protocol, the deceased's contacts were traced and screened. Of the 40 samples collected, eight individuals tested positive, reports say....
