India, Sept. 19 -- W riter-director Anuparna Roy's Hindi-Sylheti-Bengali-Marathi feature film Lovers in the Blue Night won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the Venice International Film Festival recently. She dedicates the victory to her "village, its people and their stories". Roy, who hails from Purulia, West Bengal, reveals that she wrote the story when she was 15 and had been living with it since she was eight. "The central character, Ameena, is based on a migrant woman in my village who worked as a bonded maid. She was married and yet lived all by herself till the age of 80, waiting to be seen and liked by her husband. That intrigued me," she says. The 32-year-old, who also won the Orizzonti Best Director award for her debut short film Songs of Forgotten Trees at the film festival last year, adds that such recognitions bring her hope. "With competition from 26 countries for the NETPAC award, being selected by the jury is huge. While I was sceptical about the win, the honour made my day, because ultimately you work for such recognition," she ends....
