'Behen, woh thali hai': Canadian influencer's jewellery hack sparks meme fest
India, June 4 -- One person's trendy decor find is another person's everyday kitchen essential. Canadian influencer Anais Young found herself at the centre of an online debate after an Instagram video posted recently showed her using an Indian steel thali as a jewellery organiser.
In the video, Young said she bought the plate for around $3 to $4 (Rs.287-382) after spotting similar ideas on Pinterest. She then arranged her jewellery and accessories across its compartments, calling the setup "so satisfying".
While Young praised the compartmentalised plate as a practical storage solution, many desi social media users were quick to point out that the "organiser" was actually a traditional thali commonly found in Indian households.
The clip quickly gained traction online, triggering a wave of memes and cultural commentary. "The West yearns for thalis," one user joked, while another wrote, "Ain't no way the West now colonised the THALI dawg." Others poked fun at the rebranding of a familiar household item, with comments such as "Girl, put that thali down" and "Langar thalis gentrification."
As the discussion grew, Young later updated the caption of her post to acknowledge the plate's cultural significance. "Learned that this plate is called a 'thali', traditionally used in Indian communities," she wrote, adding, "I want to sincerely apologise if this video came across as cultural appropriation. My intention was never to offend or disrespect Asian or Indian culture."...
