Surgery recommended for zebra with digestive blockage at Dehiwala Zoo
Sri Lanka, Oct. 10 -- A female zebra at the Dehiwala Zoo is receiving treatment for an obstruction in its digestive tract, with veterinary specialists recommending surgery after medical treatment failed to improve its condition.
The animal, one of two female zebras housed at the zoo, has been showing symptoms of illness since September 29, 2026.
Medical tests and scans confirmed a blockage in its digestive system, prompting the zoo's veterinary team to begin treatment.
However, as the zebra's condition did not improve, zoo authorities sought the assistance of Dr. Dhammika Perera, a senior lecturer specialising in equine species at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Peradeniya, on October 8.
