Sri Lanka, Sept. 27 -- A 16-year-old girl of Sri Lankan heritage has died after being hit by a car while travelling to school in north London.

The teenager, identified by British police as Melissa Premaratne, was a Year 12 student at Highgate School.

According to London's Metropolitan Police, officers were called to North Road in Highgate at around 8:13 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, following a collision between a pedestrian and a vehicle.

Emergency responders attended the scene, but Melissa was pronounced dead at the location. Highgate School confirmed that she had been on her way to school when the incident occurred.
