Sri Lanka, Oct. 8 -- Sri Lanka suffered a loss of Rs. 15.765 billion due to inferior-quality coal recently imported to the country. Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka stated this in Parliament today (08).

The National System Operator (NSO) spent Rs. 8.571 billion to purchase electricity from alternative sources to recover megawatt hours lost due to the use of inferior coal, the Minister noted.

Additionally, an extra cost of Rs. 7.912 billion was incurred by the (EDL) company for expenses including maintaining additional coal stocks, essential maintenance work, and operational charges, he further disclosed.
