Sri Lanka, Oct. 16 -- The famous tusker 'Kavantissa', recognized as one of the largest and tallest wild elephants in Sri Lanka, died a short while ago.

The ailing tusker collapsed this morning in the Siyambalangamuwa area, where wildlife officials found the animal in critical condition.

Inhabiting the Galgamuwa region, the elephant faced severe health complications following a gunshot wound to its front right leg, for which veterinary medical treatment began on the afternoon of September 24.

Veterinary teams noted that while the leg wound showed signs of improvement, the tusker suffered from additional complications over recent days, including a refusal to consume food.
