Sri Lanka, June 3 -- The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has expressed opposition to the government's attempt to increase the retirement age of Court of Appeal and Supreme Court judges.

In an official media statement issued today (03) by the SJB media unit, the party stressed that the move would push the judicial system into a serious crisis.

The SJB said delaying promotions for other eligible judges by two years would be a serious injustice, adding that the move clearly violates Article 28(e) on fundamental duties under the Constitution.

It further stated that, under the current Constitution, the retirement ages of Supreme Court judges are fixed, and any change would require a broader constitutional amendment.
