Sri Lanka, Sept. 19 -- Wearing seat belts for passengers travelling in every seat of all vehicles on expressways was made mandatory from midnight yesterday (18).

Accordingly, the seat belt law was implemented in three phases.

Its first phase came into effect on 1 June last year, making it mandatory for drivers of buses operating on all roads to wear seat belts.

In the second phase, passengers travelling in the rear seats of light vehicles operating on all expressways were also required to wear safety belts.

Accordingly, with the end of the grace period provided for it, the relevant law came into force at midnight yesterday.
