Sri Lanka, March 28 -- Salt harvesting for the Yala season commenced today (28) at the Hambantota Mahalelevaya.

T. Nandana Thilaka, Chairman of the Hambantota Salt Company, stated that the country likely avoids the need for salt imports in the future. He noted that estimates suggest a yield of nearly 90,000 metric tonnes from the Palatupana, Bundala, and Mahalelevaya salt pans.

Despite rising costs for fuel and other commodities due to Middle East tensions, salt prices remain stable. Thilaka further mentioned that the ongoing dry weather conditions will likely boost salt production moving forward.
