Railway union raises alarm over Upcountry line reopening
Sri Lanka, Oct. 5 -- The Upcountry railway line operations were resumed without the proper authorization of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), according to Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters' Union Secretary Kasun Chamara Jayasekara.
He made these remarks during a press conference held today following the restoration of train services on the Upcountry line this afternoon.
Earlier this morning, an express train traveling from Peradeniya to Colombo Fort derailed between the Kadigamuwa and Gangoda railway stations after an earthen mound collapsed onto the track due to adverse weather. Although the driver applied emergency brakes upon noticing the debris and rocks about ten meters away, the train could not be stopped in time...
