Pilot demerit points system for motorists to launch in September
Sri Lanka, June 10 -- A pilot demerit points system for motorists will launch in September as part of efforts to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related fatalities.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake informed Parliament that stronger enforcement measures are required to improve driving standards, noting that traditional regulations alone failed to curb reckless behaviour on the roads.
Sri Lanka recorded 2,750 road crash fatalities last year, with motorcyclists and pedestrians accounting for the majority of deaths.
Under the proposed framework, drivers will receive 24 points on their licences, with deductions applied for traffic violations.
