Sri Lanka, Oct. 6 -- A member of the ruling party was assaulted inside the council chamber by opposition councillors during the monthly council session held today (06) at the National People's Power-led Maharagama Urban Council.

The councillor who was assaulted is Lal Bangamuwage of the National People's Power.

It is reported that a group of councillors from the SJB, Sarvajana Balaya, and Independent parties carried out the assault.

The assaulted ruling party councillor was admitted to the South Colombo Teaching Hospital, and further investigations are to be conducted by the Maharagama Police.
