Sri Lanka, Oct. 2 -- The selected name for the newborn Nile hippopotamus calf at the Dehiwala Zoo was officially announced yesterday(01), on World Children's Day, following a competition held to propose a name for the animal.

Numerous young children participated enthusiastically and affectionately in this naming competition, with the Department of National Zoological Gardens stating that nearly 1,000 names were submitted.

Among these submissions, a committee consisting of officials from the Dehiwala Zoo selected the name "Momo".

Prizes were also presented yesterday at the Dehiwala Zoo to Avandha Tamari, the young girl who first proposed the name "Momo".
