Sri Lanka, Sept. 28 -- Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala says the government, under the leadership of the President, is taking steps to build a more professional police service and strengthen the standards of police officers.

The Minister made the remarks while attending the 85th Police Athletic Meet.

He said preparations were underway to introduce a new police uniform design as part of efforts to improve the overall quality and professionalism of the police service.

The government also plans to recruit an additional 10,000 officers to the police service during the coming year, he said.
