Sri Lanka, July 8 -- Profound concern regarding the tragic incidents at Negombo Prison between 5th and 7th July 2026 was expressed by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL).

The events reportedly resulted in 27 fatalities, including 7 prison officers, and left more than 100 individuals injured.

The association strongly condemns all acts of violence, noting that unrest inside detention facilities destabilises the Rule of Law and threatens public confidence in the judicial administration.

With tense situations also emerging across several other prisons, the BASL urges stakeholders to implement immediate measures to guarantee the safety of both inmates and staff nationwide.
