Sri Lanka, May 17 -- A monk passed away after being struck by a lorry in the Peradeniya area of Kandy.

Police stated that the incident occurred yesterday (16) on Rajawatta Road in Peradeniya.

The deceased was an 83-year-old monk who resided at an ashram in the Bowalawatta area.

According to the police, a lorry travelling from Peradeniya towards Kandy struck the monk as he was crossing the road, causing severe injuries.

Hospital sources confirmed that the monk passed away after being admitted to the Peradeniya Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the lorry was arrested in connection with the incident, and further investigations are underway.
