Sri Lanka, June 17 -- A man has gone missing after drowning in the Naabada Wewa reservoir in the Ganewewa area of the Nikaweratiya police division, police said.

Police lifeguard officers and local residents have launched a search operation to locate him.

The missing person is a 43-year-old resident of Diwullewa, Nikaweratiya.

Police said investigations were launched following a report received by the Nikaweratiya Police Station on (16).

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the man had attempted, along with several others, to rescue a crane that had fallen into the reservoir after becoming entangled in a kite string.

During the rescue attempt, he is believed to have slipped into the water and drowned.
