Sri Lanka, Aug. 31 -- The attempt to hurriedly present and pass the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution Bill to extend the retirement age of judges created a severe crisis in the country.

Convener of Lawyers for Democracy and National People's Power leadership council member Counsel Lal Wijenayake stated this.

Several parties, including him, filed petitions in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the bill.

The petitioners requested the Supreme Court to rule that obtaining approval from the public through a referendum is mandatory to pass the amendment.
