Sri Lanka, Sept. 28 -- Kirinda fishing community staged a protest against the failure to receive a reasonable solution to requests made to authorities for years regarding the sand blockage at the Kirinda fishery harbour entrance.

Harbour access gates were closed to prevent the protesting fishermen from entering the harbour, but amid a tense situation, the protesters opened the gates and entered the harbour premises, our correspondent said.

Later, around 9.30 am, the harbour manager who arrived at the location made a telephone call to the Ports Authority Chairman, informing him of the situation.

Sand removal activities at the harbour entrance will begin within the next 10 days, the Chairman stated while addressing the gathered fishermen...
