Sri Lanka, Aug. 4 -- The International Association of Judges (IAJ) called on the Government of Sri Lanka to reconsider its proposed legislation to extend the retirement age of the judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal by two years.

The call was made in a statement issued from Rome on the 3rd of August 2026, in which the IAJ expressed serious concerns about the manner in which the proposed legislation had been introduced, and the widely perceived reason for it.

The IAJ, founded in Salzburg, Austria in 1953, is the world's largest organisation of national associations of judges, representing 93 such associations from five continents. Its primary stated objective is to safeguard the independence of the judiciary.
