Government targets full recovery of coal-related losses
Sri Lanka, Oct. 11 -- Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka has said the Government intends to recover the full Rs. 15.765 billion financial loss attributed to coal quality issues during the 2025/2026 period through penalties and performance guarantees imposed on coal suppliers.
According to the minister, a total of Rs. 16.989 billion could be recovered through penalties and funds held as deposits under the existing arrangements with suppliers.
He stressed that ordinary electricity consumers would not be required to bear the cost of the financial loss, as the recovery process would be carried out through penalties and deposited funds in accordance with the legal provisions and regulations governing the coal supply contracts.
