Former Minister Piyankara Jayaratne gets 7-year jail term
Sri Lanka, Sept. 1 -- Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihal today (01) sentenced former Minister Piyankara Jayaratne to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for causing a loss of Rs.330,000 to the state by utilising funds belonging to SriLankan Catering to provide food for political supporters.
The court ordered the seven-year sentences imposed for each of the two charges-totalling 14 years-to run concurrently. In addition to the prison term, the court ordered a fine of Rs.100,000 rupees for the first charge, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment.
For the second charge, another fine of Rs.100,000 was imposed, with a further six-month prison sentence in default.
