Football final erupts into unrest in Pooneryn
Sri Lanka, Oct. 1 -- Police officers were forced to fire shots into the air to control a severe unrest that broke out between supporters of two teams during the final match of a football tournament held at a stadium in the Pooneryn town, Kilinochchi.
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran attended the final match as the chief guest.
During the match, a sudden clash erupted between spectators of both sides, which escalated to an uncontrollable level, prompting police officers stationed at the location to open fire in order to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
As the situation grew tense, steps were taken to safely escort Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran away from the location.
