Sri Lanka, Sept. 10 -- Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath announced today (10) that the compensation paid to the families of migrant workers who die during overseas employment has been increased to two million rupees.

The Minister made this statement while attending an event at the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment where 70 million rupees in compensation was distributed among the relatives of 50 migrant workers who died abroad.

Under the previous framework, six hundred thousand rupees was paid out through the free insurance cover provided upon registration with the bureau, while the remaining balance was funded through the bureau's Workers' Welfare Fund.
