Sri Lanka, Nov. 3 -- Irrigation authorities have opened eight sluice gates at the Deduru Oya Reservoir following continuous heavy rainfall across its catchment area, the Irrigation Engineer in charge of the reservoir confirmed today.

According to the irrigation engineer, six sluice gates have been raised by 3 feet each, while two additional gates have been opened by 2 feet each to manage rising water levels.

The controlled discharge is releasing water into the Deduru Oya at a rate of 15,300 cubic feet per second.

Authorities have issued a warning urging residents living along both banks of the Deduru Oya in downstream low-lying areas to remain vigilant as water levels in the river continue to rise.
