Sri Lanka, May 25 -- A prisoner who had been sentenced to death after being convicted in the high-profile 2015 murder case of schoolgirl Vidya from Jaffna, has died at Jaffna Prison this morning (25), according to Police Headquarters.

Jaffna Police have launched a special investigation into the incident.

Initial police investigations revealed that four convicts, including the deceased inmate, had filed an appeal against the death sentences handed down by the Jaffna High Court.

The verdict on the appeal had been scheduled to be delivered today (25).

Police said the inmate had been transferred yesterday (24) from Welikada Prison in Colombo to Jaffna Prison to be produced before the Jaffna High Court for the ruling.
