Sri Lanka, May 27 -- Provincial council elections cannot take place this year because authorities directed a portion of the allocated funds to cover damages caused by Cyclone Ditwah, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva stated recently.

The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) issued a statement strongly condemning this claim.

Reholding provincial council elections was a pledge the current administration made to the public to secure power, the statement noted.

CaFFE emphasised that altering a promise made to the citizens while branding themselves as a people-friendly government remains inappropriate.
