Sri Lanka, Oct. 6 -- Cabinet approval was granted to introduce regulations governing the activities of indigenous communities within designated areas.

This step was taken with the aim of protecting the traditional livelihoods and ecosystem of the indigenous community, recognizing the need to introduce a formal regulatory mechanism that ensures their ability to engage in livelihood activities while remaining sensitive to existing laws.

Accordingly, a special set of regulations was drafted under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance (Chapter 469), allowing registered indigenous members who acquired rights through law, custom, usage, or traditional practice to engage in relevant activities within designated areas.
