Sri Lanka, July 29 -- The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at the special general meeting held earlier today (29) unanimously agreed to oppose the proposed constitutional changes altering the retirement age of judicial officers in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.

BASL president Rajeev Amarasuriya announced the decision, emphasising that security of tenure forms an indispensable safeguard for judicial independence and public confidence.

The legal body noted that the initiative lacked objective justification, public consultation, or institutional necessity, pointing out that existing vacancies and procedural delays require urgent attention rather than tenure adjustments.
