Animals (Amendment) Bill, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (Amendment) Bill passed in Parliament
Sri Lanka, Aug. 6 -- Parliament passed the Animals (Amendment) Bill and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (Amendment) Bill, today.
Under the new provisions of the enacted Animal (Amendment) Bill, official permits are made mandatory when transporting pigs, sheep, and goats. The legal requirement previously applied only to cattle and buffaloes, the Parliament Communications Department noted, issuing a statement. The primary goal of the amendment is to strengthen controls against the spread of zoonotic diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans.
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation presented the Animals (Amendment) Bill for its First Reading on July 21, 2026.
