AG approves bill to raise retirement age for superior court judges
Sri Lanka, Aug. 2 -- The Attorney General has given approval to the proposed constitutional amendment that would raise the retirement age for judges of the superior courts.
The approval is sanctioned under Article 77 of the Constitution. The Judicature Act No. 35 of 1983 is also set to be amended to extend retirement ages for High Court Judges and officials in the lower judiciary.
Under the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, Article 107(5) would be revised to raise the retirement age of Supreme Court Judges to 67 and Court of Appeal Judges to 65. A parallel amendment to Section 6 of the Judicature Act would raise the retirement age of High Court Judges to 63, and District Judges and Magistrates to 62.
