Sri Lanka, May 28 -- 2 men were taken into custody this morning while excavating for buried treasure near the Malasnagala sacred site in Mahaaluthgamara, within the Mattala police division. Officers from the Hambantota Panwewa Police Special Task Force (STF) conducted the raid.

The operation was launched following a confidential tip received by the Police Special Bureau.

The apprehended individuals, aged 58 and 52, are residents of Embilipitiya Road and Wavegama in Suriyawewa.

During the raid, police discovered various pieces of equipment utilised for excavation at the site, including gunpowder, cords, and wires.
