Sri Lanka, Sept. 13 -- An 11-year-old novice Buddhist monk passed away after drowning while bathing in the Heen Ganga at Kaikawala in Meemure this morning.

According to the police, the deceased was residing at the Sri Sudarshanarama Ancient Temple in Devalapola, Gampaha.

The novice monk had travelled to the Meemure area to attend an almsgiving ceremony at a local residence when the tragic incident occurred.

Police stated that the monk had entered the river to bathe prior to the almsgiving ceremony at around 8:45 AM today, when he was swept away and drowned.

The body of the novice monk has been placed at the Teldeniya District Base Hospital, while the Ududumbara Police are conducting further investigations.
