India, Oct. 7 -- West Bengal police chief Sidd Nath Gupta, who was appointed to the post by the Election Commission (EC) when the Model Code of Conduct during the West Bengal elections, received a six-month extension in service on Tuesday.

On March 16, Gupta was appointed West Bengal Director General of Police (DGP). He was among the 483 police and administrative officials the EC had appointed to ensure the fair conduct of polls across the state. Though Gupta was set to retire on April 30 this year, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) gave him a six-month extension - his first, which was set to end this month. The ACC comprises Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the chairperson and Union home minister Amit Shah as a member.
