TRAI begins rollout of 1601 service numbers
New Delhi, Aug. 11 -- The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Monday began a rollout of the 1601-series numbers for service and transactional calls from companies not belonging to the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) and government sectors, which use 1600 series. This allocation shall happen in a phased manner, with sectors eligible for allocation of 1601 numbers during the first phase being utilities, and logistics and courier services.
The aim of TRAI is to give consumers a clearer way of identifying genuine service calls at a time when companies often use ordinary 10-digit numbers to contact customers. That can make it difficult to distinguish a legitimate call, such as one about an electricity connection, LPG...
