Ahmedabad, Sept. 15 -- Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday inaugurated a Great Indian Bustard (GIB) soft release centre at Naliya in Gujarat's Kutch district, where a chick from a second "jump-start" attempt has survived beyond the first three months in the wild, according to a government release. The jump-start method replaces an infertile egg laid by a wild female with a viable egg from the conservation breeding programme so she can incubate and raise the chick in the wild. The aim is to restart breeding in Gujarat's small, isolated GIB population, which has no wild males left. Officials called the second chick's survival a landmark for recovery in Gujarat.
