SC declines to interfere in Adani coal project case
New Delhi, May 22 -- The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to interfere with the forest clearance granted to the Adani Group's Mahan Energen coal block project in Madhya Pradesh, allowing the petitioner to withdraw the matter and pursue other legal remedies.
The court was hearing a plea by environmental activist Ajay Dubey challenging the Centre's forest clearance granted on May 10, 2025. Dubey had earlier approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT) which dismissed his plea on on April 22 on grounds of delay.
A bench of justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe questioned the delay in approaching the NGT. Under Section 16 of NGT Act, challenges must be filed within 30 days, extendable by another 60 days for sufficient cause.
