India, Aug. 15 -- The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to build a BSL-2 laboratory and metropolitan surveillance unit at Kasba Peth for which it has approved the appointment of a contractor. The project is expected to cost Rs.13.05 crore.

The civic body's standing committee on Friday approved a proposal to award the civil work to M/s Concept Creator, standing committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale said. "The new BSL-2 laboratory and metropolitan surveillance unit will strengthen the municipal system for disease surveillance, sample testing and outbreak control," Bhimale said. The facility is expected to strengthen the PMC's capacity to monitor infectious diseases, conduct laboratory testing and respond to outbreaks.
