India, Sept. 28 -- A large group of people clashed with police in Ujjain on Monday at the spot where a portion of the Shahi Masjid is proposed to be demolished as part of a road-widening project.

Police used tear gas shells to control the crowd after stone-pelting was reported, news agency ANI reported.

A heavy police force has been deployed in the area, with Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel also present at the spot.

The clash took place as authorities prepared for the proposed demolition of the mosque portion.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court is scheduled to hear the matter on Monday.
